Cysts
Cysts are enclosed sacs under the skin that may contain dead skin or a yellow, oily substance. Most cysts are not painful and do not need to be removed. However, if a cyst is tender or appears inflamed or infected, it’s important to get it checked out.
Cysts are commonly found on the face, neck, upper chest and back, but they can appear anywhere on the body. Typically, they are smooth and slow-growing.
They can be treated with antibiotics or a cortisone injection. Surgery may be necessary if the cyst is infected or if the patient wants it removed for cosmetic reasons.
Some skin cancers look like cysts, so point out any new lumps to your dermatologist during your annual skin check.
