Eczema

Eczema is an umbrella term for conditions that cause dry, red, itchy patches of skin.

The most common type of eczema is atopic dermatitis, which is a specific type of inflammation of the skin. It is usually caused by a combination of environmental and genetic factors. The immune system overreacts to an allergen, which causes inflammation, which causes the red patches.

Symptoms of eczema include:

  • Itching (the most common symptom)
  • Dryness
  • Red rash
  • Bumps
  • Scaly patches
  • Swelling
  • Weeping

Different kinds of eczema may cause additional symptoms, such as blistering or cracked skin.

Eczema can appear anywhere on the body, but it is most commonly found on the elbows, wrists, face, neck, knees, ankles and groin. It’s chronic in some people but comes and goes in others.

There are many triggers for eczema, including certain fabrics, chemicals, temperature or humidity.

Treatments include topical corticosteroids, topical immune-modifying medications and biologic drugs.
