Warts
Warts are skin growths caused by a virus that infects the top layer of the skin. Viruses that cause warts are called human papillomavirus (HPV).
Warts are often rough, skin-colored bumps, but they can be brown or gray-black in color, flat and smooth. The viruses that cause them are contagious.
There are several kinds of warts, including:
- Common warts, which grow on the fingers and backs of the hands.
- Foot warts, which grow in clusters on the bottom of the feet.
- Flat warts, which can occur anywhere on the body and are smaller and smoother than other warts.
- Filiform warts, which look like long threads and grow quickly.
You are more likely to get warts if you have cuts on your skin or have a weakened immune system.
Warts often go away without treatment. This is especially true when children get warts. In adults, warts may not disappear as easily or as quickly as they do in children. Although most warts are harmless, you may want to seek treatment.
You should see a dermatologist if you cannot get rid of warts, the warts hurt or you have many of them.
Treatment options depend on the patient’s age and health as well as the type of wart.
If you need treatment for warts, the True Dermatology team can provide a personalized plan.
