Dysplastic Nevus
A dysplastic nevus is a mole that differs from other moles. It’s called atypical because it doesn’t look like a regular mole. That difference may be an irregular border, a different color (or a mix of colors), a bigger size or a rougher texture.
A dysplastic nevus is usually found to be benign, but because it can change over time, this type of mole can transform into melanoma.
Patients with many dysplastic nevi have a higher risk than the general population of developing a melanoma. It’s important to have full-body skin examinations by a dermatologist, to perform self-exams and to use sun protective measures.
